Celosia (Celosia spp.) is an ornamental flowering plant known for its vivid, unusual blooms that resemble flames, coral, or soft feathers—hence common names like “cockscomb” and “plume flower.” The plant typically grows 1–3 feet tall, with upright stems and narrow green leaves. Its flowers come in bright shades of red, orange, yellow, pink, and purple, often with a velvety or flame-like texture that stands out in gardens.
Celosia thrives in full sun and warm temperatures, preferring well-drained soil and consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged. It’s a heat-loving annual that does especially well in summer conditions and is relatively easy to grow from seed.
Medicinally, certain species—especially Celosia argentea—have been used in traditional herbal systems. The leaves and seeds are valued for their cooling and anti-inflammatory properties and are sometimes used to support eye health, digestion, and wound healing. In some cultures, celosia is also consumed as a leafy green, offering nutritional benefits alongside its ornamental appeal.
