Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) is a biennial herb in the mint family known for its soft, aromatic leaves and striking flowers. It grows 3–4 feet tall, with large, wrinkled, gray-green leaves that have a velvety texture. In its second year, it produces tall spikes of pale purple, pink, or white blossoms with papery, translucent bracts that give the plant a slightly iridescent appearance.
Clary sage thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, preferring warm, dry conditions similar to its native Mediterranean climate. It’s relatively hardy and drought-tolerant once established, making it a good choice for low-maintenance herb gardens.
Medicinally, clary sage has a long history of use for calming the nervous system, supporting hormonal balance (especially in women), and easing muscle tension. Its essential oil is commonly used in aromatherapy for stress, anxiety, and mood support, and it may also help with menstrual discomfort and mild digestive issues.
