Baikal (Scutellaria baicalensis), or Chinese skullcap, also known as scutellaria root, or Huang Qin in Chinese medicine. This herb is traditionally used to clear heat and dry dampness – that is, it helps release stubborn (chronic) pathogens and toxins from the body. It has a bitter flavor and is cold energetically because it is a strong anti-inflammatory. Its main affinity is with the lungs, liver, heart and GI organs (stomach and intestines).
In Classical Chinese medicine, baikal skullcap is used in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disorders, poor detoxification, lung infection, chronic inflammation, and more.
Research has demonstrated that baikal skullcap herb is a potent antimicrobial against many types of viruses, fungi and bacteria, including Borrelia burgdorferi, the spirochete that causes Lyme disease.
